Nintendo Entertainment System
The Nintendo Entertainment System was one of the most successful video game consoles of all time: if you’re in your 20’s now, you almost certainly played NES at some point during your childhood. But in addition to its commercial success, the NES also is historically significant for its role in helping the video game industry recover after the “crash” and the licensing system used for its games laid the foundation for how video games are distributed to this very day.

I was only a few years old when the NES was initially released way back in 1985. By the time the Official Nintendo Player's Guide was published in 1987, over ninety games had been released and I had never played any of them. I first got my Nintendo in 1990, and soon after got the player's guide. I enjoyed reading about all the different games in the player's guide, because the only one in the book I owned was Super Mario Bros. It was a way to become familiar with lots of games without making my mom go out and buy them all for me. One game in particular caught my eye. Pro Wrestling was billed in the player's guide as a "magnificently realistic simulation of a real Pro Wrestling game." I was never able to buy the game as a child, but thanks to the miracles of used video game stores, I was able to acquire the game about eight months ago. It was four bucks, and I recall thinking, "It looks stupid, but what the heck." I had no idea what fun was in store for me.
Buying a used game means the manual is most likely not included. Such being the case with Pro Wrestling, I considered myself lucky that I owned the player's guide. In reality, instructions were neither necessary nor helpful for this game. Allow me to explain: The only controls are to move (Pad), to punch (B), and to kick (A). All the other moves (such as a wrestler's special moves, body slams, flying body attacks, etc.) use odd button combinations. At first this made it very annoying when I wanted to run and bounce off the ropes but had no idea what to press in order to perform this action.
The graphics and sounds are not too much of an improvement over the guessing game of the controls, but it is nothing that renders the game unplayable. Though the graphics are good compared to some games, the music can be repetitive. At times, though, the music can seem quite catchy and the fun the game brings makes the graphics important. Add all this to the relative corniness of the game, and it so addicting that it became an instant classic to me. It soon became a classic among my friends as well; we play it at parties and any other chance we get. The phrase "random button excitement" was born thanks to this game, because really that is all you can do in order to execute any sort of special moves. You must hit random buttons to succeed. Having good random button skills is key, because too much thought on how to do a move can result in the opponent executing a wonderful maneuver out of pure luck.
The game has six wrestlers you can play as. They are (from left) Starman, Fighter Haybusa, Kin Corn Kan, The Amazon, Giant Panther, and King Slender. The point of the game is to become VWA champion, then defend the title, and then defeat the Great Puma to become the supreme bad ass or something. I have never had the patience to sit through to the end because if you lose in Round Eleven of Fifteen, then you have to start all the way back at Round One. To help you progress through the ranks, each wrestler has their own special move, some more comedic than others. Fighter Haybusa's, for example, has his "back brain kick." Now I have only pulled off this maneuver once, and as you can see in the picture it is obvious why that is. You not only have to hit the right combination of buttons to execute the maneuver, but you need to be positioned just right so as you actually hit the guy in the back of the head, or else you fall flat on your butt. My personal favorite, however, is Starman because if you use him against a computer player, their AI in the first ten rounds is so bad that you can use the flying cross chop about ten times before the computer player knows what's up.
My suggestion to everyone is get this game. Hide the kids, lock the neighbors in their basement, do whatever you gotta do because once you have Pro Wrestling you will be so grateful. The two-player mode has more replay value than Goldeneye, and it will make you laugh so hard that you would never forgive yourself should you miss out on this game.
